NEW HAVEN--Yale University was one of 130 campuses that took part in a national walkout on Wednesday. It was all to take a stand against President-elect Donald Trump's immigration policies. At Yale, students want their school to be a sanctuary campus.
Ramon Valdez, one of the walkout organizers said, "We believe it's the first step before Donald Trump even takes executive office."
Julia Monk added, "We do not support the notion propagated by our president elect."
Earlier this week, the Yale community wrote a letter to the university president and provost urging them to act on their request to make the university a sanctuary campus.
According to Valdez, "We actually got a statement from the university saying they were open to this."
On Monday, New Haven Mayor Toni Harp told residents the city will remain a sanctuary city and she's willing to put up a fight.
Harp is one of many mayors of sanctuary cities across the country that have vowed to defy Trump's order to stop those policies or lose federal funding. Being a sanctuary school means that New Haven Police officers or immigration agents could not enter campus simply for immigration reasons.
Harp did point out that Trump has changed his tune on illegal immigrants, now saying he wants only those who've committed crimes to be deported.
"I think there was a lot of rhetoric going on during the campaign that makes people worry. I'm really happy he's toning the rhetoric down," said Harp.
