WALLINGFORD -- For now, there’s a lot of food at the Connecticut Food Bank’s headquarters in Wallingford. That will change, and fast, with Thanksgiving just one week away.
According to Bernie Beaudreau, CEO of the Connecticut Food Bank, "We’re about at 95 percent of where we want to be. We're in the last few days before the final distributions go out on Monday or Tuesday."
That last 5 percent will help the Food Bank feed the 50,000 to 60,000 households it intends to next Thursday.
But this time of year there’s more than just a challenge to feed families . As you know, it's getting colder, and electric bills are getting more expensive. That sometimes leaves families who are living paycheck-to-paycheck with a decision to make: feed their families, or keep their homes warm.
That's why the Food Bank teamed up with United Illuminating, one of the major electric companies in Connecticut, to help families.
This year, every family that withdraws from the food bank will also get four energy-efficient LED light bulbs, which last 25 times longer than regular incandescent light bulbs and use significantly less energy. Less watts of electricity equals savings on the monthly electric bill.
"Anything that helps a household reduce their cost of running a household is really great," Beaudreau said of the partnership.
