NEW BRITAIN — SIX people were displaced in a Saturday morning fire in New Britain.

Firefighters were called to 17 Carlson Street at 6:10 a.m. when second floor residents reported the smoke alarms in the vacant third floor apartment were going off.

The Red Cross said they were helping six people.

First and second floor residents were able to get out safely and were being helped by the Red Cross.  Deputy Chief Paul Walsh says the exact cause of the fire, which started in the third floor bedroom,  is under investigation.  He says damage to the third floor was severe.  The first and second floors suffered water damage, and utilities to the building were turned off.  It took about 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control
