HARTFORD–A man who was found to be responsible for the overdose death of a young Groton man has been sentenced.

The federal government charged Rudy Hernandez, 43, of New London, in April as part of a statewide initiative to crack down on drug dealers whose purchasers die.

A 25-year-old man was found unresponsive in his car on Route 12 on April 12, and police determined that Hernandez sold a middle man the fatal heroin, who in turn sold it to the  victim.

Hernandez has been detained since April 20, and had heroin and cocaine in his home when police searched him as part of their investigation into the victim’s death.

Hernandez pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of heroin on July 6, and was sentenced on Monday to 34 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
