MILFORD — A fifth-grader at Milford’s John F. Kennedy School has been chosen as Connecticut’s “kid governor.”

Jessica Brocksom was presented with a ceremonial sash as the results of a statewide election were announced. The mayor and state lawmakers attended the event Wednesday inside the school’s gymnasium.

Jessica ran on a platform promoting humane treatment of animals. Some 4,400 fifth-graders from 45 cities and towns voted in the program, which was created last year by the Connecticut Public Affairs Network to encourage interest in civics and government.

After her inauguration in January, Jessica’s responsibilities will include making speeches and public appearances and creating videos on ending animal cruelty.

Last year’s winner, Elena Tipton, of East Hartford, ran on a platform of kindness.
