OLD LYME — A person was killed after they were struck by a tractor-trailer truck Thursday afternoon in Old Lyme.
Police say that Ashley Ferguson, 32, of Middletown, pulled on the right shoulder on I-95 southbound near Exits 70 and 71 on Thursday to check on her 2-year-old child in the back seat.
After getting out of the car and going to the back door to open it and check on the girl, a tractor-trailer that was passing by hit her and the car.
Ferguson later died from her injuries.
The highway was closed from around 11:30 a.m., and was expected to reopen around 6 p.m.
The road was closed for so long, police say, because the crash caused a fuel spill, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection had to clean it up.
Police say they are still investigating the circumstances around the crash, and ask if you witnessed anything to call 860-399-2100.
