NORTH HAVEN – A serious four-car crash in North Haven Friday morning sent four people to the hospital.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Dixwell Avenue and Hartford Turnpike.

A 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe was headed west on Dixwell Avenue when it was involved in a crash with a 2005 Toyota Rav 4. The force of the crash sent the vehicles into two other vehicles that were stopped at the intersection – a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander and a 1999 Honda Civic.

Four people were taken to Yale New Haven Hospital: a 43-year-old man from the Hyundai, with serious injuries; a 38-year-old woman from the Hyundai, with serious injuries; a 30-year-old man driving the Honda, and a woman in her 40s driving the Toyota.

Officials are still determining which patient from the Hyundai was the driver. The patients were thrown from their seats and had to be extricated by North Haven firefighters.

The driver of the Chevrolet declined medical treatment at the scene.

“This was a very serious crash involving multiple vehicles and multiple patients. I want to commend our firefighters for their diligent work in assessing the patients and rescuing multiple trapped occupants,” North Have Fire Chief Paul Januszewski said in a statement.

The incident is under investigation by the North Haven Police Department.
