BRANFORD -- The Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter in Branford is gaining recognition this week for a very good reason. With over 75 volunteers a week, they have been able to save hundreds of animals this year alone.

They do more than find forever homes for a variety of animals. The shelter focuses on education.

Director Laura Burban developed her love of pets in New Jersey as a child.

"We saw dogs being abandoned at an alarming rate on the farm," she said. "We would take them all home and I would try to find them new homes."

With her broad mission, she helps find more than 500 pets a home each year.

"We really take an educational approach here, we want to give people resources if we can," Burban said.

Things like animal camp, to learn about animals that live on the shoreline, and lobbying for animal rights in the state Capitol.

The education is working. They’re proud to tell you at the Cosgrove Animal Shelter that the number of animals put down because they couldn’t find them a forever home is zero.
