AMHERST – The president of Hampshire College announced the school would return the American flag to full-staff Friday, following a controversy that sparked local protests and nationwide news coverage, according to masslive.com.

Hampshire College students lowered the flag to half-staff shortly after the election of Donald Trump, and days later burned it.

The college responded by raising a new flag for Veteran’s Day, which drew ire from the student body and marginalized groups, many of whom feel threatened by Trump’s election and disillusioned with what the flag represents.

Ultimately, Hampshire College President Jonathan Lash made the decision to remove the flag on Nov. 18 in order to open a dialogue on the flag and its effect on the college community.

A “Raise the Flag” protest ensued, and the decision was eventually made to put the flag back up.
