NEW HAVEN--Sometimes, the best medicine for kids is, well, kids.

Third-graders from the King-Robinson Inter-District Magnet School in New Haven "Spread the Love" on Friday at Yale-New Haven Hospital's Smilow Cancer Hospital.

This year, the students have been learning about the needs and issues that their community is facing, and about organizations designed to address those needs.

After the unit, students picked an organization to support for Southern Connecticut State University's outreach day, and they picked the Smilow Cancer Hospital.

The students wrote get well cards to kids who are their age, but have to stay in the hospital due to terminal illnesses.

But that's not all.

The students got donations from outside organizations and created care packages.

One of those students was Antoine Williams. The compassionate third-grader said, "We learned that they can't see their families because they're too sick to go back."

So they jumped to action and made the care packages. But what's inside?

"The box has different kinds of stuffed animals and different kinds of cards from my class. We made them for Yale because we want them to feel better," Antoine said.

The boxes had donated t-shirts, as well as stuffed animals that come from the overflow of toys sent to Newtown after the Sandy Hook tragedy.

While the kids were not able to meet the recipients of the gifts, they did get to present them to Scotti Williams, a representative from Smilow.

"It's an excellent thing for people, for these teachers and these professionals to teach the children to give back to the community and children that are in need because those children in the hospital would love to be here playing or in school as well," she said.

When Antoine was asked what he would say to the sick kids if he was able to meet them, he said, "I would say 'I hope you feel better and I hope that you keep having the strength that you have.'"
