WEST HARTFORD — A man delivering newspapers for the Hartford Courant was hit and killed by a pick-up truck in West Hartford Friday morning.

Belford Adoplhus Muir, 64, of Jamaica was crossing South Main Street just after 6:30 a.m., police said, when he was struck by a truck traveling southbound. The crash happened near New Britain Avenue and Elmfield Street.

The driver involved did remain on the scene. No charges have been filed against the person who was driving a Ram 1500 pick-up truck.

As emergency responders arrived, they found a bystander administering CPR. Muir was taken to Hartford Hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

South Main Street, between New Britain Avenue and Elmfield Street, will remain closed while the incident is under investigation, according to police.  Drivers should seek alternate routes. Police said they hope to reopen the area by Friday afternoon.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of everyone involved in today’s incident, which involved an independent delivery contractor,” said Andrew S. Julien, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Hartford Courant in a statement.
