MERIDEN - An SUV crashed into a Meriden house, sending the driver to the hospital and scaring a homeowner who was still in bed at the time.

Gorgianna Stockton, who lives in the Wall Street home that the car hit, said she was in bed when the walls around her were torn apart.

"I couldn't get out of the bedroom so I called 911 and was told that a car came through the house," Stockton told FOX 61. "I had to climb over a shelf to get out of the bedroom and I looked out the living room window and they were just pulling the body out of the car."

This all happened around 8 a.m. when a 56-year-old driver lost control of his GMC Envoy as he sped down a side street. Medics say he may have suffered a sudden medical condition, which would explain why he didn't seem to brake.

The accident happened at the intersection of Broad and Wall streets in Meriden.

"As far as we can tell at this point, there was no braking at all. There was still acceleration going into the building. That's why you see so much damage, that's why you see the injuries that you do," Meriden Police Capt. Thomas Cossette said.

The 41-year-old female passenger in the SUV was taken to the hospital as well.

Stockton lives in a multi-family home, but all five families have been displaced.

Another resident, Gary Grainard, said he'd just left from work but had to rush right back home. "What am I going to do?" he wondered, but added, "So much goes through my mind. It could have been a lot worse."
