EAST HAMPTON — Video surveillance cameras in East Hampton helped police catch a suspected package thief Tuesday.

On Tuesday, December 6, around 4:30 p.m., a homeowner in the Skyline Estates area of town called police to say items delivered to their home were stolen. The man said he has video surveillance that showed a man driving a silver Subaru Impreza stop at his residence and steal a package that had been recently delivered. The man gave police a copy of the video that showed the suspect and his license plate.

Just two hours later, an officer saw Impreza on Waterhole Road in East Hampton. The officer pulled over the car and interviewed the driver, who confessed to the crime, police said.

Jason Carrier of Portland, Connecticut was arrested and charged with larceny in the fifth degree. He was released on $1,000 bond and is due back in court next week.

East Hampton Police said they recovered over $600 in merchandise stolen by Carrier. This includes the original complainant’s items as well as a second package that Carrier confessed to stealing from the same neighborhood. The owner of the second package has yet to be identified. Anyone missing a package scheduled for delivery on December 6, 2016 is asked to contact the East Hampton Police Department at (860) 267-9922.

Police want to remind you to take precautions when having packages delivered to their home.  When possible try to arrange to have the packages delivered when someone is home or have the packages delivered to a neighbor who is home.  And as always if you see something or someone suspicious in your neighborhood please contact the police department.
