NEW BRITAIN -- If you like sandwiches packed with flavor and an over-the-top atmosphere than The Underground Deli is the place.

This New Britain hot spot, this week's Foodie Friday pick, is located right near Central Connecticut State University and is owned by graduate Nicole Hale.

"We have such a fun staff and our customers are great," said Hale. "We want to give everyone that comes in here a great sandwich and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere."

The deli serves up more than 50 unique sandwiches and wraps to go along with tasty salads so there is always something new and different to try.

Take or example, the "Beastmode." It's filled with fresh roast beef, cheese, bacon, horseradish, hot sauce with lettuce and tomato sandwiched between three layers of wheat bread. Or, ask for the number 38, aka "The Situation." That's breaded chicken, bacon, cheddar with Russian dressing on a roll.

The side items are all homemade and a crowd favorite is the spicy potato salad, which Hale says has some secret ingredients that keep her loyal customers coming back for more, even adding it to sandwiches.

Sandwich names like "Sir Mince Alot," "Headbanger," "One Hot Chick," and "Saucy Wench" are about as fun as the atmosphere of the deli which has a living room set-up complete with a retro video-game area so you can get your game on while enjoying lunch.

Most of the walls are chalkboard so customers can leave their mark anytime.

Some regulars even set out on "The Quest" which is a wall of fame for those brave enough to try every sandwich on the menu, of course not in one sitting.
