STONINGTON — A bill that would return a historic Connecticut wharf to the town of Stonington has reached President Barack Obama’s desk.
The U.S. Senate joined with the U.S. House in passing legislation that would transfer control of the deteriorating rock structure, dating back to 1827, from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to Stonington.
The wharf was once used as a gangway for wagons to unload 19th century schooners.
Supporters of the move to return the wharf to the town hope that one day the structure could morph into a new, more modern purpose: helping to protect a quaint, shoreline community from rising sea levels.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy said Saturday that the bill “cuts through loads of red tape so Stonington can start to redevelop their wharf.”
