NEW BRITAIN -- The final Christmas tree was set up Sunday inside Rita Giancola's New Britain home.

The Christmas house on Lexington Avenue in New Britain has been a bright spot in its neighborhood, both literally and figuratively, for decades.

For 37 years, her Christmas home put hundreds of visitors in the holiday spirit.

But after Rita passed away in August, her family decided to decorate one last time, in her honor.

They put up a tree donated by Karabin farms.

The family is hanging all those ornaments and lights, which Rita would begin stringing in October.

She opened her home, free of charge, only asking for donations for families in need.

Now, those who enjoyed Rita’s home are donating their time to make it come alive for one more Christmas.

The Christmas house opens Friday, December 16 and runs until December 23.
