ESSEX -- First responders are on the scene of a two serious crashes on Route 9, one of which is fatal.

According to the Essex Fire Department, a box truck and another vehicle collided on Route 9 southbound near Exits 3 and 4. One car went down an embankment.

Then, according to State Police, police and firefighters responded, and around 7 p.m. another passenger vehicle slammed into an Essex Fire Department firetruck that was parked at the scene of the first crash.

LifeStar was called since at least one person has life-threatening injuries, but that person later died.

It's not clear if or how many other people are injured, or which crash the injured parties were involved in.

One firefighter received minor injuries from the second crash.

The road was closed for several hours as first responders attempted to rescue passengers, investigate the crash and clean it up, and traffic was diverted off Exit 4. The road reopened around 11 p.m.
