HAMDEN — Though Hamden Police did not originally believe it to be a hit-and-run, they are now investigating a fatal pedestrian crash as such.

On Sunday, police responded around 2 a.m. to reports of a crash on Dixwell Avenue. They found Harris Tendler, 58, of Hamden, dead. They said on Sunday he was trying to cross the road when he was hit by a car driving north.

On Sunday, police said the driver, a 70-year-old from Bridgeport, stopped immediately and called emergency personnel.

Now, surveillance footage from the area indicates that Tendler was initially hit by a different car, which drove off. The man who stayed was the second to hit him.

Police are trying to find a light-colored four-door sedan, which likely has front-end damage. If you see a car matching that description please call 203-230-4036.

The driver of the second car was taken to the hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening.

FOX 61 spoke to friends of Tendler’s, who say a memorial service will be held for him on December 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Temple Mishkan Israel on Ridge Road in Hamden. It’s being put on by the New Haven Camp Laurelwood community, “Hank’s” friends.
