SOUTHINGTON -- Mount Southington opened on Saturday with the first big snowfall of the season.

Many people were excited about hitting the slopes with fresh snow on the ground.

"You really can't beat opening day with this much snow," said Kevin Tolderlund, who came to snowboard.

Jay Dougherty, president and general manager of Mount Southington said they're the only ski mountain open in the state right now.

"Anytime we have snow in the forecast or we have a snowy day people are always excited when they see it in their backyard, so it's like the first thing that comes to mind for someone who's really interested in winter sports," Dougherty said.

However, the mountain will be closed Sunday, Dec. 18 due to the predicted rainfall.

"You have rain warm temperatures and then you had the temperatures dropping like a rock, and that causes a flash freeze so anything that's wet will turn to ice including our chair lift seats," Dougherty said.

Nevertheless, the slopes will open back up on Monday.
