HAMDEN — Hamden Police have found a car involved in what was initially thought to be a deadly hit-and-run, but has since been determined to be just a crash.
On Sunday December 11, police responded around 2 a.m. to reports of a crash on Dixwell Avenue. They found Harris Tendler, 58, of Hamden, dead. They said he was trying to cross the road when he was hit by a car driving north.
At the time, police said the driver, a 70-year-old from Bridgeport, stopped immediately and called emergency personnel.
But Wednesday, police said surveillance footage from the area indicated that Tendler was initially hit by a different car, which drove off. The man who stayed was the second to hit him. But the story changed again when on Tuesday, December 20, police announced that other car had been found. Now, police say it was not involved in the crash, and only the man who stopped was.
It is no longer a hit-and-run investigation. However, charges could still be filed against the driver who stopped.
Friends of Tendler’s held a memorial service on December 18 at Temple Mishkan Israel in Hamden.
