HARTFORD — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority banned alcohol from all trains and at stations from noon on New Year’s Eve until noon New Year’s Day.
The transit agency said the intent is to maintain orderly travel and safe operations at stations and terminals.
As in prior years, open alcoholic beverage containers will not be permitted on Metro-North or Long Island Rail Road trains, or in stations and on platforms.
MTA police officers will be on duty at Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal, stations and trains to enforce the restriction.
Police will confiscate alcoholic beverages and issue summonses carrying fines or imprisonment for anyone who violates the rules. Violators can also be removed from trains or stations.
Similar restrictions are imposed on other holidays as well, such as St. Patrick’s Day.
