FARMINGTON — After a severe winter blood shortage, the American Red Cross declared an emergency call for blood and platelets donors to make appointments now.

The hectic holiday season for typical blood donors has contributed to about 37,000 fewer donations in November and December than what was needed, the Red Cross said.  Snowstorms and severe weather also impacted donation numbers.

According to the Connecticut Blood Services Region, more than 2,000 fewer donations were collected in November and December. Donations are critically needed now so that patients can continue to receive lifesaving treatments.

For the 10th year, the American Red Cross and Dunkin’ Donuts are partnering to help increase donations and reward donors. Through the campaign, all those who come to give blood or platelets in January at Red Cross blood drives in Connecticut will receive a $5 Dunkin’ Donuts card.

You can help by visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross is extending hours at many donation sites for more donors to give blood or platelets.
