OLD LYME -- The Big Y Supermarket reopened Monday after two people were stabbed over the weekend. Monday morning, police identified those involved but are still determining exactly what happened.
The stabbing occurred around 2:15 p.m. Sunday inside the grocery store at 90 Halls Road in Old Lyme. The supermarket was closed as police investigated.
State Police said two people were involved in the stabbing, but they are still investigating who was the victim and who was the aggressor, according to Trooper Kelly Grant.
Jing-Song Gao, 34, who operated the sushi counter at Big Y, was killed in the incident. Gao is from Methuen, Massachusetts. The other man involved, Tan Lin, 40, of Old Lyme was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital via Life Star where he is being treated for serious injuries.
Police said that this was not a random act, and the two people knew each other. Police also added there is no threat to the public.
Lin's sister-in-law lives with the couple in Old Lyme. She told FOX 61 she could not confirm that the argument started over money.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a post-mortem examination to assist in the investigation.
Police say they will continue to investigating the reason for the assault.
If this death is ultimately deemed a murder, it would be the first in Old Lyme since 2009.
