SIMSBURY — The deer rescued from a frozen river had to be euthanized Tuesday due to the injuries it suffered according to the DEEP.

A deer was trapped on the ice of the Farmington River in Simsbury for hours Monday, and the entire ordeal was caught on camera.

The DEEP planned to send the deer to Roaring Brook Nature Center as a final sanctuary destination.

However, after they tranquilized the deer, they took it to a veterinarian who determined the deer’s injuries were too significant to treat.

The deer was suffering from a broken shoulder, a broken jaw and other small fractures. It also had a great deal of cuts and lacerations, and was losing too much blood.

DEEP officials, upon the vet’s recommendation, decided the best course of action was to end its suffering. They euthanized the deer early Tuesday.

Authorities started by watching the deer’s progress, hoping she could get herself off the ice. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the deer was chased onto the ice by coyotes right off of Riverside Road. The Simsbury Animal Control Officer was on the scene as well.

At first, the deer had at least one leg stuck in the water but was able to worked it out. Around 1:20 p.m., a team of wildlife experts tried to put sand on the ice in hopes of helping her gain footing.
