TOLLAND — A Mansfield man is in custody after police say he hit a construction zone worker then led officers on a brief chase.

The Tolland Fire Department responded to an area near 128 Merrow Road, or route 195, just south of I-84 near exit 68, after a car hit a construction crew member Wednesday morning.

Police said the accident happened just before 2 a.m. The driver, Christopher Hand, 40, of Mansfield, is accused of driving off after he hit the victim, Robert Harrison, 49, of Waterbury. Hand was chased by police before he was caught, police say. A passenger in Hands’ car, Randy Carpenter, 31, of Vernon, wasn’t injured.

Harrison was taken by ambulance to the St. Francis Hospital trauma center. He is expected to be okay and suffered only minor injuries, police said.

Police said Hand hit a metal guardrail and safety barrel before hitting Harrison. Harrison was thrown almost 27 feet from the road over a guardrail, police added.

Hand faces multiple charges including leaving the scene of an accident and engaging in a pursuit and disobeying an officer. He is being held on $7,500 bail and is due in court in Rockville on Monday, February 27.

State police remained at the scene as the fire department reopened the road. They remind drivers to slow down as they approach work zones.
