NEW LONDON —  Due to state budget issues, the organization behind New London‘s annual Opsail event are scaling back the festival and looking for new ways to pay for it. The three-day Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival usually draws big crowds for the tall ships.

According to The Day, Opsail received $60,000 in state funding last year but this year they’re not planning on that funding, because they say it’s not an appropriate time to ask for state money.

Organizers are hoping they can still put on the event with a “different flavor.”

The event costs about$100,000 dollars to put on. Appearance fees for the popular tall ships can cost betwen $5,000-$10,000.

The Maritime Heritage Festival is planned for September.
