GRANBY — A University of Hartford student days from graduation has been seriously injured in a fall at a state park.

Police said first responders were called to Enders State Forest in Granby at about 3 p.m. Thursday after the student, Adam Messing, 22, of River Edge, New Jersey, fell near the park’s popular waterfall.

After falling yesterday, Messing, who had been unconscious for an extended period of time after the fall, was flown by medical helicopter to a Hartford hospital with serious injuries, where he remained Friday afternoon.

A University of Hartford spokeswoman confirmed that Mersing attended the school and is scheduled to graduate Sunday.

The waterfall has been the scene of serious injuries in the past.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is investigating.

The University of Hartford sent this statement to their community:

Dear Members of the University Community,

There are news reports today about a University of Hartford student who fell while hiking at a waterfall off campus in Granby, Conn. yesterday. The student is Adam Messing, a senior scheduled to graduate on Sunday with a degree in insurance and finance from the Barney School of Business. He is hospitalized, his family is with him, and I know you will join me in hoping and praying for his recovery.

Adam was hiking with other University students and close friends when this accident occurred and I hope that you will hold them in your thoughts and prayers as well.
