MIDDLETOWN — Connecticut State Police issued more than 2,000 tickets for traffic violations during the Memorial Day weekend.
State troopers increased patrols and conducted sobriety checkpoints in an effort to reduce accidents over the weekend.
The enforcement period started at midnight Friday, and ended Monday night. During that time, state police issued 719 tickets for speeding and 688 tickets for not wearing a seat belt. Police say 31 people were arrested for driving under the influence. Altogether, 2,658 violations were issued. Those also included unsafe lane changes, following too closely and texting while driving.
There were more than 300 accidents over the weekend – two included fatalities.
During Memorial Day weekend last year, troopers arrested 47 drunken drivers and handed out almost 829 tickets for speeding. Troopers also issued 791 citations for failing to wear a seat belt.
