OLD SAYBROOK --  Town's First Selectman’s office confirmed long-term Fire Marshal Donn Dobson has resigned from his position Friday and the investigation has been suspended.

Old Saybrook's First Selectmen, Carl Fortuna said the resignation came after an exhaustive internal and subsequent criminal investigation. Dobson, who has been the town's fire marshal since '98, has been under investigation for several months.

"The criminal investigation of Old Saybrook Fire Marshal Donn Dobson has been suspended following an agreement reached between Mr. Dobson and the Middlesex County State's Attorney's Office. The agreement includes Mr. Dobson's voluntary resignation of employment with the Towns of Old Saybrook and Westbrook, restitution, and his preclusion of working as a Fire Marshal in Middlesex County." said Old Saybrook police.

The investigation focused on time sheets submitted to various municipalities in which Dobson was the only person being investigated.

The investigation, which began in May, also involved Westbrook Town Hall because Dobson was also a part-time fire marshal there.

Search warrants were sent out in May for the fire marshal's offices in both towns in addition to Dobson's Old Saybrook Fire Marshal's vehicle, which was also searched. A briefcase was among the items removed from the SUV.
