HARTFORD — Connecticut lawmakers say they’re optimistic this will be the year the General Assembly requires high school students to learn about a 2000 law that allows newborns to be dropped off at a hospital — no questions asked.

Legislation has already cleared the Education Committee requiring instruction about the Safe Haven law be included in public high school health curriculum. It’s dubbed “10 Minutes in 10th Grade.”It awaits action in the House of Representatives, where it passed last year but faltered in the Senate.Democratic East Hartford Rep. Jeff Currey says 33 babies have been saved “from abandonment and near-certain death” since 2003, but there’s evidence more awareness of the law is needed.

He notes how a deceased newborn was found in 2014 in a trash can in East Hartford.
