TORRINGTON — A Connecticut fire chief has proposed cutting funding for a volunteer department that recently showed up to a fire with no water in its truck.

Torrington Fire Chief Gary Brunoli proposed the cut as an alternative to laying off a paid firefighter. He says reductions will be necessary under the budget as currently proposed, and last week he told the city’s Board of Public Safety that he cannot count on the Torringford volunteer department.

A commissioner with the Torringford department, Gary DelMonte, tells the Republican-American that the young volunteers aren’t getting sufficient training from the city. He acknowledged that the department showed up to a fire scene with an empty tanker truck in March, noting that they had been advised not to store water in the vehicle during the winter.
