An astonishing discovery over a decade after the 9/11 attacks – part of what is believed to be the landing gear from one of the hijacked jetliners was found wedged between two buildings about three blocks from Ground Zero. It was discovered in a narrow area between the buildings, one of which is the site of a planned mosque.

The New York Police Department says they’re securing the area as a crime scene. Police say the part includes a clearly visible Boeing identification number.

“The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will do an examination of the area around the part to see if its toxic in any way,” said New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. “They will also check to see if there are any human remains at the site.”

Kelly also said it is possible the part could have been lowered between the buildings.
