A man who fatally stabbed an acquaintance and wounded others at a party after people criticized him for passing gas was sentenced Friday to 35 years in prison.

Marc Higgins had previously pleaded guilty to murder and first-degree assault.

Higgins fatally stabbed Matthew Walton, 21, and wounded three others at the house party in Bristol Jan. 15, 2011.

Higgins told police he was angry at being derided and wanted to teach people that they shouldn’t “mess” with him, according to the court documents.

Higgins, who was described by witnesses as being “very drunk,” stormed out of the party, came back armed with three knives and started stabbing people indiscriminately, according to court documents.

According to an investigation report, Higgins turned himself in and confessed to the stabbing.
