It was April 8 when police say 24-year-old Jonathan Alvarado and 24-year-old Sebastian “Seb” Award committed armed robbery at an Old Saybrook Days Inn before fleeing from police.
They crashed into a state police car in Westbrook and began firing at officers, striking one of them. By the end, Alvarado was fatally shot and Award was severely injured.
A 12-page warrant obtained by Fox CT explains more about exactly what happened and the potential motive.
There was an initial confrontation at the Days Inn where the responding officer actually recognized both suspects from prior contact with police. He ordered them to stop their car, and had to use pepper spray to try to force them to stop, but they got away.
A female victim reported that she and her boyfriend were held hostage at gunpoint the prior night in the hotel and were robbed.
The chase reached speeds of 80 mph in a 35 mph zone. But the officer’s car and the suspects both crashed down into an embankment. An exchange of gunfire from just three feet apart left the officer shot in the shoulder. Alvarado was shot by police and later died. Award was rushed to the hospital.
Back at the Days Inn, the female victim said the suspects told her they had to leave the country and go to Mexico to avoid 14 years in prison. She said the suspects pointed to duct tape, trash bags, a hatchet, shovels and bleach and threatened to use those items on the victims.
The male victim told police both suspects were armed with revolvers and were doing drugs at the hotel. He said they tried to steal $15,000 from his bank account and planned to steal and sell his car for cash.
Inside the suspect’s car, police found multiple rounds of high-caliber ammunition and a hatchet. Award is charged with attempt to commit murder, kidnapping with a firearm, robbery and assault on a police officer among several other charges.
