The family of a man shot to death Monday night in New Haven expressed relief Thursday at the quick arrest of a suspect.

Qusaan “QB” McKoy was shot multiple times at Chapel Street and Derby Avenue Monday night and later died at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

McKoy’s family spoke at an emotional press conference at police headquarters in New Haven Thursday afternoon, the same day that Shaune Meyers appeared in court to face charges in the shooting.

The victim’s young nephew said, “They didn’t have to take him like that. They really didn’t,” before breaking down and stepping away from the microphone.

Wednesday afternoon — shortly before 3:30 — officers spotted Meyers and engaged him in a firefight and pursuit that ended in a standoff on Norton Street.

The suspect later surrendered before the arrival of a SWAT team that police had called in.

Police credited a community effort in the quick arrest Wednesday of the suspect.
