Former Waterbury Mayor Philip A. Giordano’s effort to overturn his conviction for sexually assaulting two young girls continues Monday in federal court in Bridgeport.
His lawyer, Aaron Romano of Bloomfield, will argue that the lawyer who represented Giordano at his criminal trial was ineffective. Giordano was sentenced to 37 years in prison in 2003 for civil rights offenses associated with the sexual assaults. He pleaded no contest to state sexual assault charges and was sentenced to 18 years to run concurrently.
Giordano, who is serving his sentence at the U.S. Penitentiary in Tucson, Ariz., will not be at Monday’s hearing.
