Six families were displaced Thursday night after they were evacuated from their Hartford apartment building for fear it would collapse.

Firefighters, police and city inspectors responded to 26 Putnam Street Thursday afternoon. The brick building was evacuated after it was learned that the northern wall was bulging out and warped.

“I came back and the building was falling apart. Then they told us we couldn’t go back in there and we had to wait for further instructions,” resident Randolph Torres said.

The two adjacent buildings were evacuated as well, leaving dozens in the rain for hours. Those residents were allowed back in their homes after the area was deemed safe. The city of Hartford was in the process of relocating the six displaced families.
