A man who allegedly confronted police while holding a handgun was shot by an officer at a Ridgebury Road home on Friday night and died later at a hospital, state police said.

The man, whose identity was withheld until his family could be notified, was pronounced dead at Danbury Hospital, according to Lt. J. Paul Vance of the state police.

The officer involved was not injured but also was taken to Danbury Hospital, where he was treated and released, Vance said. His name also was withheld.

Ridgefield police responded to 423 Ridgebury Road around 5:15 p.m. after a report of a possible domestic dispute, Vance said.

The officers confronted a man who was armed with a handgun and standing in the yard of the residence, Vance said. The officers ordered the man to put down his weapon, but he refused, and instead raised his weapon toward the officers, Vance said. One officer fired his service weapon, striking the man, Vance said.

State police Major Crimes Squad detectives are investigating, Vance said.

The office of the Chief State’s Medical Examiner will conduct an examination to determine the manner and cause of death of the man, Vance said.
