OLD SAYBROOK – A report by the American Red Cross shows that more than a third of the $303 million the charity organization raised for Hurricane Sandy Relief remains unspent. As of late April, the Red Cross had spent roughly $190 million.

Now, some are questioning what is going on, seven months after the storm.

“It would be nice if there is money out there and there are people who are in definite need of this money so they can get back into their homes get it. The people that deserve it and need it should have it,” Arcangela Claffey, an Old Saybrook resident who endured Sandy storm damage said.

The Red Cross sent out a statement saying that disaster recovery is a marathon, not a sprint.

“We understand that some people believe we should spend these funds more quickly. But, we also need to spend donor dollars as wisely and carefully as we can. We vet every dollar we spend to make sure it is a good use of hard-earned donor dollars,” The organization said.
