NEW HAVEN – Police have arrested two men who they believe committed two armed home invasions.

Jovann McCullough, 19, of Winter Street, and John Benjamin, 21, of Highland Street, were arrested separately in the last week.

The first home invasion was reported on May 6 on Huntington Street. Two women, 71 and 58, were carrying groceries through their back door when two men forced them inside, according to a release from New Haven police. One of the men had a handgun. They left with a car belonging to one of the victims.

Then, on May 14, a home invasion was reported on Osborn Street. Two residents there told police that masked men with handguns came into their home, tied them up and searched the home for valuables, the release states. Again, they left in a victim’s car.

Both cars were later recovered. Video surveillance showed one of the suspects abandoning one of the stolen cars on Henry Street, the release states.

Last week, police in Hamden caught McCullough driving a stolen car and told New Haven police that he “closely resembled the person captured on the video surveillance,” the release states.

He was charged in both cases.

Police soon got Benjamin’s name, and early Tuesday, New Haven police and members of the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force arrested him at his home.

In addition to the home invasion charges, Benjamin is being charged with first-degree escape for leaving a halfway house. His bail is $1 million.

McCullough’s bail is expected to be increased from $150,000 to $650,000, the release states.
