BRIDGEPORT A 61-year-old woman and her 6-year-old niece remain in critical condition after a hit and run Monday evening, police said.

The two were struck crossing Washington Avenue at Highland Street at about 8:45 p.m., said police spokesman William Kaempffer.

The vehicle involved was described as a large, light-colored sport utility vehicle, he said. The vehicle fled north on Washington Avenue after the accident.

The vehicle is also missing a side mirror, which was discovered at the scene, Kaempffer said.

Both victims were taken to Bridgeport Hospital, Kaempffer said. The child was transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital Tuesday.

Two other young children made it safely across the street and were not injured in the accident, he said.

Due to the serious nature of the injuries, the police serious accident team was called to the scene Monday night, Kaempffer said.

“The department’s traffic division is conducting an intensive investigation,” Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr. said in a statement Tuesday. “To the driver: The clock is ticking. If you panicked and fled the scene, we need to hear from you.”

Police were not releasing the victims’ names as of Tuesday evening.
