There is a new flu strain in Connecticut and it’s affecting only dogs. If your dog has been affected by the canine virus, it may display some of the following symptom: body temperature is warm to the touch, listlessness, poor appetite, runny nose, cough similar to ‘kennel cough.

The canine influenza virus spreads through secretions, the air, coughing and sneezing, and while humans are not affected, we can spread the virus by simply petting a dog that has the virus.

The Guilford Veterinary hospital has treated 20 dogs with the canine flu over the past month. Dogs grouped together are more susceptible. So puppy classes, doggy day care, kennels, and groomers are all perfect places to pass it on. Dogs that have been vaccinated against the classic kennel cough or parainfluenza, which is a flu-like virus, will still require two vaccines to combat this new strain.

Many kennels, groomers and day cares will likely begin to recommend or require dogs to be protected against the CIV before they can enter the facility.
