NEWINGTON – Police tracked a bear through back yards Tuesday afternoon before the animal disappeared into woods near Main Street and Harding Avenue.

“It didn’t make any aggressive actions,” Sgt. Christopher Perry said of the bear, which he described as “good sized.”

Residents reported the bear about 3:20 p.m. near Willard and Harding avenues, close to the Maurette Manor apartments, Perry said. Officers were dispatched, and they trailed the bear until it crossed Harding Avenue and Main Street and went into a wooded area on the east side of Main Street, he said.

The bear did not cause any damage, Perry said.

The town notified the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Perry said.

“Unless a bear is aggressive or demonstrates sickly behavior, they (DEEP) just track it,” he said.

If residents spot the bear, they should stay away and call police at 860-666-8445.
