New Haven Police say Thursday morning’s one-car crash, which left two men dead and one injured, is the worst they’ve seen in a long time.

At 5:05 a.m., a 2011 Hyundai Sonata was  traveling westbound on Whalley Avenue at a high rate of speed, when the car became airborne after hitting a curb in front of the Mobil station at the confluence of Whalley Avenue and Amity Road.

The car soared at least 90 feet before crashing through and toppling a canopy covering two gas pumps. One man was ejected and survived, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. The bodies of the two deceased men remained inside the mangled car for nearly 11 hours while police reconstructed the accident scene.

Video surveillance footage from the Mobil station and other businesses in the vicinity of the crash will be used as part if the investigation.
