PLAINFIELD — An 18-year-old man faces several charges after a man fell out of the bed of a pickup truck he was driving early Saturday and suffered a serious head injury, police said.

Police were called to Academy Hill Road (Route 14A) at 12:46 a.m. on the report of a man falling from the bed of a pickup truck which continued driving. When officers arrived, they found Jason G. Schutte, 18, of Plainfield, in the middle of the road with a serious head injury.

Schutte was taken by ambulance to the Plainfield Backus Emergency Care Center and later flown by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital where he is in critical condition, police said.

Police said three witnesses who were in the truck with Schutte lied about what happened. An investigation determined that Kyle A. Pomo, 18, of Plainfield, was driving the truck, police said. He was charged with evading responsibility in a serious injury motor vehicle accident, reckless driving, interfering with a police officer and filing a false statement.

Pomo was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Daniel Superior Court on July 1. The case remains open and additional arrests are expected, police said.
