WATERFORD — A 63-foot boat sank in Long Island Sound off of Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford Saturday and the people on board were rescued by other boaters.

Local police and the Coast Guard also went to their assistance. No injuries were reported.

The regional police boat, the Coast Guard, state Environmental Conservation police and the Goshen Fire Department from Waterford responded to the call. Contractors were also on scene to refloat the boat, said Chief Donald Chapman Jr. of the Goshen Fire Department.

The report came in about 2:30 p.m. that the vessel had struck something the water about a quarter mile off shore and was taking on water, Chapman said. “They don’t know what they hit,” he said.

The vessel was listing and the stern was down in the water when rescuers arrived, Chapman said.

“We basically monitored the water for any fuel spills and made the people were good,” Chapman said.

Within an hour the boat was substantially submerged, he said.
