This week Hartford Courant columnist Dan Haar talks about an increase in the gas tax set to occur on July 1, UConn’s plans to move its West Hartford campus to the old Hartford Times building and a report that says Connecticut has shown some job growth recently.
Republican legislators held a petition drive asking Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to hold a special session of the legislature to repeal the tax increase, but Malloy and others said the Republicans were hypocritical because they had voted for the increase back in 2005.
House Republican leader Lawrence Cafero and Senate Republican leader said times have changed and the economy can’t support any increases in taxes.
As for UConn’s new campus, business owners in the Front Street area hope the college students and faculty will breathe new life into that section of the city. The Hartford Times building hasn’t been fully utilized since the newspaper folded in the 1970s.
