In a riveting 35 minute hearing before a Fall River, Massachusetts superior court judge, both Aaron Hernandez’s defense team and the prosecution presented strong arguments during the defense’s attempt to overturn a district court judges denial of bail for Hernandez.
Hernandez’s attorney, James Sultan, cited his client’s accomplishments as a star pro football player, upstanding member of his community, a father and one who has no prior criminal record. Sultan added that, given his client’s recognizability, he poses no flight risk.
It didn’t take long for the prosecution to dispel that notion, claiming the evidence in the murder case against Hernandez is overwhelming.
Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Bill Mccauley revealed new evidence secured by the prosecution after executing a search warrant for a condominium leased by Hernandez.
Among the items found were 3 boxes of .45 caliber ammunition. This ammunition matched that found at the murder scene as well as the .45 caliber magazine clip found in a Hummer owned by Hernandez.
In the end, Judge Renee Dupuis agreed with the prosecution in upholding the district court’s denial of bail.
She said she believes Hernandez is a flight risk, and while she admitted the commonwealth’s case is circumstantial, it is also very, very strong.
Hernandez is due back in court July 24.
