Thousands of flags were placed on the lawn of Terryville Congregational Church Friday morning. It’s part of the Field of Flags, which was started in 2005 by the Somers Congregational Church.
Each flag represents an American life lost in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout the past several years the flags have traveled from church to church across the U.S and finally made their way to this Terryville church just in time for the Fourth of July.
“Even though we don’t know anybody [who was killed], in our hearts those were the guys that were out there fighting for us,” said Debby Lehmann, who stopped by to view the display.
There were 6,728 flags placed on the lawn by volunteers. When it display back in 2005 there were more than 2,200. For many, the sight is emotional. They’re not just flags. They represent lives, and that knowledge can take a toll on onlookers.
“We had veterans behind us who were here as we were putting them up, and they had tears in their eyes,” said Jerry Wunsch, a volunteer from Terryville Congregational Church. “It was very emotional.”
Right next to the Field of Flags is a board that has the names and rank of each American casualty.
“When something like this is displayed, no matter what time of the year, it is nice to see that the country has some patriotism,” said Betty Salerno.
The flags will remain at Terryville Congregational Church until July 19. This Sunday at 10 a.m. the church will have a special service of dedication for the Field of Flags.
