MIDDLETOWN – A company called Greenbelt Management is proposing a 15,000 square foot facility in Middletown.

The facility would be used for production and packaging only, and not for sale or distribution.

The lease has already been endorsed by the Economic Development Committee and would be a five year renewable lease for $60,000 per year.

The facility would require between five and seven full-time employees, and could potentially produce 50 to 65 pounds of medical marijuana each month.

As part of the state law approved in May of 2012, Connecticut can have between three and 10 marijuana producers once regulations have been written and approved. This is the second proposal so far in Connecticut.

As of last week, there were 660 patients certified by doctors to have medical marijuana. Of the patients, 450 have already registered with the state and the remaining 210 are currently in the process.

Meanwhile, Connecticut hasn’t started licensing for growers and dispensers, however, the state may start accepting applications in August if certain Department of Consumer regulations are approved. All applicants must be able to put $2 million in escrow into the state and start growing immediately.

City leaders in Middletown are open to the proposal and said it is a reality in the state and an opportunity for economic development.
